Neighbourhoods: The Heights (Burnaby)



The Heights refers to the enclave between Boundary Road and Capitol Hill. North of Hastings is Burnaby Heights, with its great hillside views of Burrard Inlet and the North Shore mountains. Burnaby Heights was known in the early 1900s as Vancouver Heights, Burnaby Heights has a significant number of heritage houses built by its early British settlers. The neighbourhood south of Hastings is known as Willingdon Heights.

The community has high-traffic Hastings Street access east into Downtown Vancouver and east to Port Moody. Willingdon Avenue connects to Kingsway & Metrotown, and Canada Way southeast to New Westminster.

Homes

This area is mostly single-family homes, with a higher density and some high rises along Hastings Street. The historic Heights area north of Hastings still has a number of beautiful old homes from the 1900s-1920s.

Schools

The community is served by an elementary school and Burnaby Mountain High School.

Shopping

The historic Heights area commercial district is along Hastings between Boundary Rd and Gamma Ave. The area has quite a few Italian, Portuguese and Chinese restaurants, delis, bakeries and barbershops. Recreation

There are several parks in North Burnaby - Confederation Park just west of Capitol Hill, Montrose Park on the shore of the Inlet noted for its birdwatching possibilities, Willingdon Heights Park off Douglas Road and Kensington Park with its ice skating arena and public golf facilities (pitch and putt). Just off Inlet Drive, as you leave the area heading towards Port Moody, there is a wonderful seashore park called Barnet Marine Park with a beach and great views of Belcarra Regional Park across the narrow passage. The community is also quite close to the PNE grounds at Hastings Park, as well as Empire Field, Hastings (horse) Racecourse, and the Pacific Coliseum (ice rink and concert venue) which are located on the west side of the Trans-Canada Highway.
