Alderwood is on the west edge of Toronto, nestled between Etobicoke Creek on the west and a light industrial area to the east which is home to some major corporate employers. Originally known as New Toronto Heights, since it lay above the railroad tracks, it grew in the 1920s when area farms were subdivided for home building, and was named in 1933 when the community got its first post office (from the English translation of the Indian word for "Etobicoke," which is the place where the alders grow). Most of the homes in the community date back to the post-War boom. Motorists have a 20 minute commute into downtown Toronto on the Gardiner Expressway via Browns Line. The same on-ramp gives residents 20 minute access to Pearson Airport via Highway 427. TTC Bus service connects the Long Branch GO Train station with the Kipling and Islington subway stations (on the Bloor-Danforth line) via bus routes along Browns Line and Evans and Horner Avenues. Schools The community is served by 2 public elementary schools, 3 Catholic elementary schools, a public high school and a public library. University of Toronto is easily accessible via the Bloor-Danforth subway, and Humber College Lakeshore Campus is accessed via the 501/508 Lake Shore Blvd bus. 
ShoppingBrowns Line has a community shopping district with stores and restaurants anchored by Alderwood Plaza (Browns Line & Evans Ave). The power shoppers don't have far to go, with the Sherway Gardens Shopping Centre just north-west, via Evans Drive. Recreation The community has access to the paved recreational pathway along Etobicoke Creek, which connects to Marie Curtis Park on the shore of Lake Ontario and the Waterfront Trail into downtown Toronto. The community has a number of well-treed parks, and has an ice arena, an indoor pool, a community centre, and Toronto Golf Club (private) and Lakeview Golf Course (public) are just across Etobicoke Creek. Homes Homes here date back to the 1920s to 50s, and are mostly bungalows and storey-and-a-half houses, all with driveways and garages. Over time, older bungalows are being replaced with semi-detached and detached homes. Prices in Alderwood are in the low to medium-low range. Community Map
