Humber Heights is adjacent to the well-treed Humber River, and south-east flowing Humber Creek winds its way through this community. (You can get great views of the creek and ravine parklands from the pedestrian bridge over Royal York Rd.) Once just a farming community, clustered along Scarlett Rd, and part of the Village of Weston, the community was subdivided during World War I to provide worker housing for nearby munitions factories, and grew substantially in the post-WWI boom, Motorists access Highway 401 at Weston Rd or at Islington Avenue. TTC buses along Royal York and Scarlett Rd connect to Royal York and Runnymede stations (Bloor-Danforth subway), respectively, and the east-west Eglinton and Lawrence Avenue buses connect to the Yonge-University-Spadina subway. Schools The community has two public elementary schools, a Catholic elementary schools, and a public high school. Shopping Shopping is clustered along Royal York Road and Dixon Road, with a large plaza at 1500 Royal York Road. There is a popular retail area across the Humber along Weston Rd, on both sides of Lawrence Ave W. Recreation Humber Heights Is adjacent to and overlooking the Humber River Valley with its nature and recreational trails (there's a memorial plaque in Raymore Park to 32 residents who perished in 1954's Hurricane Hazel. Riverlea Park has a community and Toronto's only greenhouse allotment gardens. The community has an outdoor pool, and ice arena, and across the Humber, south of Lawrence, is a park with another outdoor pool and ice arena. Homes Humber Heights has a very diverse mix of houses. Home buyers will find quaint Victorian cottages from the early 1900s, Edwardian style houses from the 1910s and 20s, Tudor-style homes from the 1930s and 40s, bungalow, split-level, and storey-and-a-half houses from the 1950s. At the high end, you can also find impressive mansions along Yorkleigh Avenue and Westmount Park. At the lower end, you can find a Metro Toronto Housing apartment and townhouse complex, east of Scarlett Road overlooking the Humber valley. West of Scarlett Road 1960s built split-level houses, and many rger new homes built in the 1970s, 80s and 90s, amongst a number of heritage homes from the 1840s and 1850s 11 Yorkleigh Avenue, 5 Hill Garden Road, 15 La Rush Drive, 581 Scarlett Road).
