  • Markland Wood is nestled between Renforth Creek and Etobicoke Creek, south of Burnhamthorpe. The community began around the saw & grist mill built by John Silverthorn, on land granted in 1810. After 1870, when the Etobicoke Creek's flow no longer was able to power the mills, the Silverthorns focused on farming until 1958 when the family sold the farm to developer Mark Cavotti. The community now has 1200 homes and has an active ratepayers association.

Motorists have fast access to Highway 427 via Burnhamthorpe, and Pearson International Airport is only 5 minutes away. Bus service along Mill Road, Markland Drive and Bloor Street connect passengers to the Kipling Subway (Bloor-Danforth subway) and GO Transit stations.

    Schools
The community is served by three elementary schools (2 public, 1 Catholic), a high school and a public library nearby on The East Mall. University of Toronto is easily accessible via the Bloor-Danforth subway, and Humber College Lakeshore Campus is accessed via the #44 Kipling bus

    Shopping
Residents shop at the Markland Wood Plaza (Bloor Street & Mill Road) and at the Burnhamthorpe Mall (on Burnhamthorpe Drive), with The West Mall providing ready access to the much larger Sherway Gardens mall for any heavy-duty shopping.

Morning Traffic at Bloor and West Mall Recreation
There are paved recreational pathways along Renforth Creek, connecting up to Centennial Park. There are a number of large parks in the community with baseball, tennis, and children's playground facilities. On The West Mall is an ice arena and outdoor pool. The Markland Wood Country Club forms the community's south and west edges along Markland Drive winds through the Etobicoke Creek valley.

    Homes
Most homes in Markland Wood were built between 1960 and 1962, and are typically detached single-family homes that are Georgian and Regency revival, with some contemporary bungalow and split-level houses. Homes have generous lots with driveways and double garages. Mature trees are on many properties, some with apple trees from the old Silverthorn farm. Houses along Markland Drive back onto the Markland Wood Country Club and overlook the Etobicoke Creek valley. Homes in this community are in the low to mid-priced range.
