  • Smithfield is located at the far north-west boundary of the City of Toronto, with Steeles to the north, the Humber River to the east and the West Branch of the Humber to the south. The community is named for an early settler who lived roughly Albion Rd & Martin Grove Rd.

    In the NW corner is a light industrial area and a cemetery. The community is home to many new Canadian residents, and to a large amount of subsidized housing. Major community features include Etobicoke General Hospital and Humber College's North Campus.

    Humber college Highway 27 runs through the centre of this neighbourhood provides access to Highway 401 east-west, and Highway 427 south to the Gardiner Expressway into downtown Toronto. The community has access to transit which connects to either the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line or the Bloor-Danforth subway line, and there is a GO Bus stop at #27 and Rexdale Blvd, which is used by the Bolton-York Mills route and the Guelph - Toronto Union Station route.

    Schools
    Smithfield is served by 8 public elementary schools, 6 catholic schools, and 2 high schools. I the south of Smithfield is the North Campus of Humber College

    Shopping
    Albion Centre, just NW of Albion Road & Kipling Avenue is the largest mall, and there are several smaller shopping plazas around the Smithfield neighbourhood. Just south of the community is the Woodbine Centre, which anchors a retail strip along Highway 27 which continues north of Finch with a range of large & small retailers as well as the popular Albion Flea Market, with over 400 vendors.

    Humber Arboretum Recreation
    The community has handy access to nine km of recreation trails along the Humber River and West Humber River valleys. The Humber Arboretum, beside Humber College, is a popular botanical & ornamental garden featuring hundreds of flowering species especially Rhododendrons and Azaleas. The neighbourhood ha two theares, one in the Albion Centre, and one to the south at Woodbine Centre, which also has a Fantasy Fair amusement area. To the south of of Woodbine Centre is the Woodbine Race Track.. There is also an ice arena, a pool, two running tracks, and a community centre.


    Homes
    Many of Smithfield houses were built in 1960's, 70's, and 80's, with newer developments along Finch Avenue, west of Highway 27. Housing includes split-level houses, bungalows and detached, two-storey houses. The community also has a number of private and subsidized-living townhouse complexes as well as high-rise apartment buildings, generally clustered along Kipling Avenue.
