Night view of ship on Welland Canal The City of Thorold is a community of 18,000 along the Welland Canal, just south of St. Catharines. Thorold is famous for the Welland Canal's twinned Flight Locks where "ships climb the mountain" of the Niagara Escarpment. Flight locks #4, #5, #6 & #7 are truly engineering marvels.

The community has excellent highway access to the rest of the Niagara, as well as toward Hamilton & Toronto to the west and toward Buffalo to the east, via the #406 to the QEW.
