  • Ajax is a town of 84,000, nestled between Pickering and Whitby. This rural farmscape rapidly became urbanized during World War II, when it became the site for a major defence contractor assembly plant. I has since grown up as a bedroom community for Toronto, being well-connected by GO-Trains and the 401.

    Schools
    Ajax has 12 public schools, 6 separate schools, 4 private schools, a French school, 3 public and 3 separate high schools.

    Shopping
    Ajax is home to Durham's premier shopping area, with many shops along Kingston Rd, and over 92,900 sq. metres (one million sq. ft.) of retail space. Historic Pickering Village offers a quaint 19th century Quaker settlement. Along Harwood Avenue between Bayly St and Kingston Rd there are a wide variety of shops including the newly-renovated Harwood Place Mall.

    Recreation
    Ajax has 465 acres of parkland and natural areas and very picturesque stretches of the Waterfront Trail.Catch horse races at Picov Downs Racetrack, or golf at 3 golf courses. Ajax's Community Centre has an indoor pool, four ice rinks, squash courts and the unique Higher Ground Rock Climbing facility.

    Ajax offers a variety of lifestyles including rural agricultural, nonfarm residential, hamlets, and three urban areas. Beaverton, Cannington and Sunderland. There is a mix of housing, from estate homes, large lot singles and semi-detached townhouses, as well as condominiums, apartments an seniors housing. The late 1970s and early 1980s saw extensive high rise development in Ajax. Over the 1980s, extensive development along Lake Driveway brought large, upscale housing to the southern part of Ajax. Housing Ranges from $110,000 - $650,000, with single family detached homes averaging $295,000, semi-detached running $220,000 and condos running $175,000.
