Runnymede, just east of Jane, and between Bloor and the CPR railway tracks is a quiet family neighbourhood with goods schools and shopping, and great access to High Park and transit. John Scarlett settled here in 1808, building several lumber mills along the Humber, and built his own house "Runnymede" roughly where today Dundas & Runnymede meet. By the mid 1890s the streets were planned and houses were built in the early 1900s. Motorists can take Dundas and Bloor Streets into downtown Toronto in about 25 minutes. And Black Creek Drive just to the north connects to Highway 400 and Highway 401. Buses along Jane, Annette and Dundas Streets connect to the Bloor-Danforth subway line, and the Jane station is a 15-20 minute walk awy. Schools The community is served by 3 elementary schools, 1 Catholic elementary school, 1 high school and 2 public libraries. University of Toronto is accessed via the Bloor subway, and York University can be accessed via the Jane Street bus. Humber College's Lakeshore Campus is a few miles to the SW along Lake Shore Blvd. Shopping There are several shopping districts including Jane Street, Annette Street which have mostly small stores, as well as Dundas Street (east of Jane) which has a few shopping plazas and a grocery store. Recreation This neighbourhood is close to paved recreational pathways through extensive parklands along the Humber River, running from Steeles down to the lakeshore. These parks also have popular fishing and picnic areas. There are a number of smaller parks and playgrounds around the community. There are 3 indoor pools, an ice arena, a running track in the neighbourhood, and it s close to High Park. Village Playhouse live theatre is on Bloor Street. Homes This neighbourhood has some large older homes and mansions north of St John's Rd, and a mix of bungalows, duplex and triplex dwellings, and detached and semi-detached homes to the south. The community was built stages from 1890 until about 1950, creating a diverse mix of building styles. Homes in this tree lined neighbourhood run in the low to low-intermediate price range.
