Silverthorn is a hilly area east of Back Creek Drive and the CN railway tracks north of St Clair Ave extending north of Eglinton. This working class neighbourhood is heavily Italian, as well as many new Canadians. Because of the hills, Silverthorn has number of twisting one way streets, very different from Toronto's typical grid pattern. The community is named for 1825 settler Aaron Silverthorn, his wife and three sons, who moved into cattle farming. The farm was developed for housing in 1914, though it wasn't until the 1920s that the area got Toronto's municipal services. The community is convenient to Northwest General Hospital on Keele Street. Motorists drive to downtown Toronto via Keele Street, or can head to Highway 401 via Eglinton Avenue and the Allen Expressway. Both are about 15 minutes away. TTC riders take the Keele Street and Rogers Road buses to the Bloor-Danforth subway line, or Eglinton Avenue bus to the Eglinton West station (Yonge-University-Spadina subway.) Schools The community is served by 2 elementary schools, 1 Catholic elementary school, 2 high schools, and 2 libraries. University of Toronto is accessed via the Yonge-University-Spadina subway, and York University can be accessed via the Keele Street bus. 
ShoppingSilverthorn residents shop at Westside Mall (Eglinton Avenue & Caledonia Road), and along Eglinton Avenue, with small store and strip malls east of Keele, transitioning to the York-Dufferin shopping district around Dufferin. Recreation The community has access to paved recreational pathways and parklands along Black Creek. The community has a number of small parks and playgrounds, but is best know for its larger parks. Trethewey, Coronation, and Keelsdale Parks are along Black Creek at Eglinton, and have a running track, an ice arena, baseball diamonds, several tennis courts, and an indoor pool, with another indoor pool in the community. Homes Silverthorn's housing dates to the prewar period 1914 to 1930, and are mostly smaller 2-storey brick and frame detached and semi-detached houses, with some 1-1/2 storey homes and some bungalows.
