These communities lie east of Jane, and south of Black Creek down to the CPR railway tracks. Syme is named for a Scotsman who settled along Black Creek in the 1870s, who went on to a long career in school board politics. In the early 1900s, Syme was developed. Harwood overlooks the Black Creek Valley, and is traversed by a smaller creek. The community was developed around a church on Weston Road, and was named for the church's and donor. Harwood has grown into a working class community originally supporting local brick and auto factories, and representing over 40 cultures. Recent development activity is along St. Clair Avenue West. Motorists take St. Clair Avenue West into the downtown core, or take Black Creek Drive north to Highway 400 and 401, and Pearson Airport. TTC users take the Rockcliffe Boulevard and Jane Street buses to connect to the Bloor-Danforth subway line, or take the St. Clair to the St. Clair West station (Yonge-University-Spadina subway line). Schools The community is served by 2 elementary schools, 1 Catholic elementary school, 1 middle school, 1 high school, University of Toronto is accessed via the Yonge-University-Spadina subway, and York University can be accessed via the Keele Street bus. Shopping There are some scattered shops along St Clair Ave, some plazas on Jane just north of Black Creek, and a cozy shopping district along Weston Road, with some outlet stores. Along Weston Road wbetwen St Clair and Dundas has a number of big box stores at "The Junction" 
RecreationThe community has access to paved recreational pathways beside Black Creek and the Humber River. Along this route, Black Creek flows through a concrete flood control channel. There are a number of parks and playgrounds in the neighbourhood. Harwood Park is a popular tobogganing area. The community has a running track and an ice arena. Homes There are small cottages from the late 1800s, originally homes for area market gardeners. Homes in Syme from the early 1900s were Victorian semi-detached houses, detached houses with barn-like gambrel roofs, and bungalows. Harwood's homes cover a more recent period from the 1920s to early 60s, and include bungalows and semi-detached homes. Many homes have excellent views of the Black Creek Valley. There is a recent high-density development north of St Clair Ave, east of Symes Rd. Homes in this community are priced in the low to low-medium price ranges. Community Map
